What Your MRI Doesn’t Tell You About Your Pain. Imaging Shows Structure—Not Function

MRIs are powerful tools.
They can show:
Disc bulges
Tendon irritation
Labral tears
Degeneration
But here’s the problem:
They don’t always explain your pain.
The Disconnect Most People Experience
You get imaging done and hear something like:
“You have a disc bulge”
“There’s some degeneration”
“You have a tear”
And naturally, you think:
“That must be why I’m in pain.”
But clinically, it’s not that simple.
What Research and Clinical Practice Show
Many people with:
Disc herniations
Rotator cuff tears
Labral tears
…have zero pain at all.
At the same time:
Some people with “clean” MRIs have significant pain
Why This Happens
Because pain is not just about structure.
It’s about function.
Pain is influenced by:
Movement patterns
Strength and stability
Load tolerance
Nervous system sensitivity
What an MRI Can’t Tell You
An MRI does NOT tell you:
How well your joints move
If your muscles are firing correctly
Where you’re compensating
What actually triggers your pain
It’s a static image of a dynamic system.
A Common Scenario We See
Someone comes in with:
Shoulder pain + MRI showing a tear
But the real driver might be:
Poor scapular control
Weak rotator cuff stability
Overload from training volume
So instead of only treating the “tear,”we treat the system around it.
Why This Matters
If you only focus on imaging:
You may overestimate the severity
You may feel stuck or discouraged
You may jump too quickly to invasive options
But when you focus on function:
You gain control of your recovery
You improve how your body moves
You often reduce pain significantly
How We Approach This at Matador Rehab & Performance
We use imaging when needed—but we don’t rely on it alone.
Our process focuses on:
1. Movement Assessment
Identify dysfunctions and compensations
2. Hands-On Evaluation
Joint mobility
Tissue quality
Pain patterns
3. Strength + Stability Testing
Find weak links contributing to pain
From There, We Build a Plan That May Include:
Chiropractic care
Rehab-based exercise
Soft tissue work
Dry needling or shockwave therapy
Strength & mobility training
The Bottom Line
Your MRI is a piece of the puzzle—not the whole picture.
Pain is more complex than what shows up on a scan.
And more importantly:
There’s often more you can do than you’ve been told.
Your Next Step
If you’ve been told:
“This is just how it is”
“You’ll have to live with it”
Or you’re unsure what your MRI actually means
Let’s take a deeper look.
